WILL Clubhouse Actually Help Me Advance My Music Career?

If you spend a lot of time on social media, you’ve probably heard of an app called “Clubhouse”. Clubhouse is an exclusive new networking app where users can connect and spread knowledge with one another. Within the app, there are many “clubs” and “rooms” each with different topics, ranging all the way from “How to Monetize your Tik Tok” to “How do I tell my girl about my BDSM fetish.” However, despite the occasional suspect room, the app offers an opportunity like never before to speak directly with successful and insightful professionals, no matter your craft.
As a music producer, I saw Clubhouse as a great opportunity to soak up business knowledge, attract artists, and grow my following. I began by simply joining rooms that seemed of interest to me and before I knew it, I was speaking directly to industry professionals; from A&R’s to sample clearing specialists. Next, I found myself playing my own beats in front of grammy-nominated producers and DJ’s which was awesome, even if they said they sounded like trash. Throughout my short stint on the app, my business network has grown immensely and I’m blown away by the opportunities it has presented. For instance, I’m now working on a song with an incredibly talented blues singer from who knows where.

To any aspiring music business professionals, I highly suggest hopping on the Clubhouse Caravan, while keeping in mind these three tips:

1. Don’t be afraid to ask questions

Pardon my sudden “school teacher” vibes but seriously, the people moderating these rooms want to share their knowledge, and asking questions makes it easier for them to do so. I get that in larger rooms, it can sometimes be intimidating to press that unmute button and let your words fly. However, trust me when I say questions lead to conversations, which lead to follows and connections.

2. Be professional

The app’s plentitude of silly rooms and overall laid back vibe can make it easy for one to take their serious hat off for a little longer than they should. I’m not saying that business chatter requires you to put on a bowtie and speak in old English. However, what I am saying is professionalism attracts professionals and the way you speak can have a huge impact on the lens through which they view your work. And just remember: you never know who could be hearing what you say in a given room and on Clubhouse, first impressions can last forever.

3. Have fun

Need I explain? This app is fucking dope.
